Stradivarius 1722 Violin "Jupiter"

For today’s recital program, I have selected some well-known works of the late 18th to early 20th Century that I believe everyone will enjoy.

Along with these works, I hope you will also enjoy the sound of the Stradivarius “Jupiter”, loaned from the Nippon Music Foundation. This very special violin was made in 1722 by the legendary violinmaker Antonio Stradivari in Cremona, Italy. Instruments with nicknames, such as Jupiter, are ones that were cherished by distinguished musicians and have been preserved by avid collectors for over 300 years.

“Jupiter” has the power to draw out the innermost of what a violinist wants to express in music to the absolute maximum. The process of pursuing the violin’s mysteries and charm and blending together my own imagination and vision to make music, to me, can only be described as an incredible moment. When I first played on “Jupiter”, I spent hours just getting to know the instrument and establishing communication; seeing if light bow pressure works, or heavy bow pressure, and so on. I encountered so many different kinds of sounds and vibrancies in the instrument during this process. Even now I am constantly moved by the new discoveries I make.

I am thrilled as a musician to be able to deliver music of my ideal, and to share and experience it with all of you. I am truly honored to be given this opportunity to contribute to the community through music.
